VOGUE AUSTRALIA MAY 2024

My name is Jaimie Novick and I am a sustainable fashion designer from Sydney, Australia, currently based in London. My brand ‘Love from Jaimie’ is a small scale upcycling brand, with pieces produced by me in Berlin. The name ‘Love from Jaimie’ comes from the importance of knowing where your clothes are from and who is making them. I want to show customers that there is a person behind the brand, making the clothes with love and care. I want to be positioning my clothes to my customers as a gift and having a community around it rather than just a one way interaction, bringing more value to the pieces and a fully transparent process. All of my materials are sourced second hand, with a majority being old clothes used for upcycling. I find that this pushes me to work intuitively with the garments and use the life they had before as inspiration for what will be created. At the moment my brand is stocked at pop ups and at Veist in Neukolln. Sustainability is core to my brand and working on the balance between my personal passion to create with the understanding that we don’t need anything ‘new’ is something constantly on my mind when working on Love from Jaimie.

A part of the art collective ‘Ouch, A fairy bit me…’ formed alongside m00nch1ldsw4g in Berlin. This involves hosting performances, exhibitions, parties and creating works that focus on the idea of duality and challenging the systems that we are used to blindly following. We aim to foster a community that is strengthened from mutual care and passion for change. Our recent exhibition at block1 Berlin can be viewed here. Stay tuned for more events in future in London, Berlin and around the world.

My passion for sustainability came during my time at university. I felt that even within the fashion design course not enough was being done to address the issues that the industry faces. This encouraged me to create a society named the 'Fashion ethics and sustainability society' or 'FESS'. This was a group that amounted to over 100 yearly members and in 3 years has gained over 800 instagram followers. We put on events such as clothing swaps, industry panels, interstate trips to Melbourne Fashion Week and more. We also started a magazine exhibiting think pieces on sustainability and showcasing small designers' works. This experience not only showed me leadership and teamwork skills, managing a group of 6 other executives, but also taught me so much about the industry, more than I could have gained from simply completing the fashion degree.

I have a bachelor degree in Design in Fashion and Textiles as well as a Diploma of Innovation from the University of Technology Sydney. I am enrolled to start my Masters in Fashion Futures at the London College of Fashion, UAL. I also participated in the Design academy Nova by Vorn Fashion Hub and Zalando, completing a course on sustainable materials.
